Empowering Creatives to Showcase Their Work.

We believe every creative deserves a platform to showcase their work in a way that reflects their unique vision.

Our mission is to empower professionals with easy-to-use tools to create and share video portfolios that showcases their work, and gets them gigs.

Why vfolio?

Years ago, I was a burgeoning videographer and editor in the business with some good projects under my belt, and like many creatives, I wanted a website to showcase my work on to share with prospective clients and employers. I've dabbled in web projects before, but first looked at solutions that already existed -- why reinvent the wheel?

However, looking at the options, I was left very disappointed.

Some services are simply job boards that just happen to have portfolios, treating the page more like a second resume, complete with having to copy-paste your resume onto their annoying editor, searchable keywords (that everyone just keyword stuffs anyway), categories that are meaningless, tags, specialities, etc. Actually viewing actual work is a chore that may take several clicks to even get to, most of the time has their own weird video player that barely works, and sometimes they even recommend that the client watches other people's work!

Other services are more general website builders, and they work fine, but come at the cost of over-generalization. The video features are meh, because the point of these websites are to set up shops and merch stores. They're well designed (at least better than the job board profiles), but lack some pretty basic features for videos, including tagging, organizing by clients, etc. Also, this isn't even mentioning the price -- as of writing this, the minimum price on one of the most popular website builders is $16 per month, and that's if you purchase an annual subscription! If you choose to bill monthly, it's $25 per month!

Then, there's the final options, just having a profile on social media accounts. I mean, most photographers just share their Instagrams, why not just share your YouTube? This was an option I genuinely considered, but three things held me back.

  • Sharing a link to my YouTube account with prospective clients just felt, for lack of a better word, embarrassing. I'm trying to present myself as a professional, not a hobbyist, and having a dedicated website showcases that.
  • I have a lot of content on my YouTube account, a lot of which I don't want to always share. Do they need to see every single video I've uploaded? I could always make another account just for this, but that leads me to the third point,
  • Unless you re-upload it, you can't have other user's content on your channel. Normally this isn't a problem, but when you're doing video work for others, you can't showcase it as something you helped create. You can make playlists with whatever videos you want, but most users simply click off the home tab onto videos, which only shows content uploaded to your channel. If you do re-upload, you lose any views, comments, and likes the video had. Views aren't everything, but they are a good flex, and if you made content for a YouTube channel with a million subscribers and you re-upload it to your channel, the only people who will view it will be clients, and that takes the air out of it a little bit.
  • Finally, YouTube isn't perfect, there isn't really a way to categorize things. You can make playlists, but again, when a user just goes to your videos tab, they can organize it by latest, popular, or oldest, and that's it. No tagging videos as "Editor", "Score" or "2nd AD".

So, years ago, looking at these options, I decided to make my own, and I made the first version of what would become vfolio, my own personal portfolio website. It was very successful for me, the ease of use and ability to actually showcase my work won me a few clients and employments, and even if I didn't win the client, I would get constant compliments on the website. Then, in early 2024, I had the idea to allow others to also use it, and after months of work, it became what it is now, a place to actually showcase your work to clients.

I know this was a bit of an odd way to do an about page, super personal, but don't worry, I'll get back to the corpo speak now.
